Our history

From transport systems to high-tech filling and maintenance solutions for the modern day gas filling industry. Kosan Crisplant has gone through many changes since the beginning in 1951. 

                        

Years 1951-1959

The company known today as Kosan Crisplant was founded in 1951 by Mr. Svend Christensen. The company sold various transport systems for completely different purposes, e.g. for transportation of milk cans and gas cylinders.

The company name, Chrisplant, was a mix of the Christensen familiy name and the English word plant for workshop or factory.

Unfortunately, a workshop smith left out the letter H by mistake when carving the company name into the first piece of a chain conveyor. Mr. Christensen was a commonsensical type of man, who would not discard a piece of iron and disappoint his first customer by not delivering on time, simply because of a misspelled company name. So he changed the company name to Crisplant and lived up to the promised delivery time.

Throughout the 50s, Crisplant continuously created new equipment and the range of products and markets grew steadily; the innovation highlights of the decade being the chain conveyor and the filling carrousel.

By 1957 Crisplant was the world-leading company for filling systems for gas cylinders.

Years 1960-1989

Over a 10-year period, The Kosan Group acquired all the shares in Crisplant and eventually added Kosan to the company name in 1969.

Investments were made in a new factory, and in January 1960 the company moved to new premises in Aarhus with 35 employees.

Until 1961 all manufacturing activities were placed with subcontractors, but strict quality requirements resulted in a transfer to in-house manufacturing.

The mid-60s saw a new chapter in the history of the company as an ambition to automatise and rationalise the handling and sorting of parcels led to the introduction of a new business area. The company now had two main product lines: LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas Filling Systems) and the new line ATS (Automatic High-Speed Transport and Sorting Systems).

Besides refining existing equipment, product innovation in the early 60s was centered on cylinder logistics in terms of palletizing systems. At the same time, the company was the catalyst for the introduction of LPG in various countries; a trend that continued well into the 70s.

In 1988, Kosan Crisplant was taken over by five managers via a management buy-out.

Years 1990-1999

In 1990, Kosan Crisplant was the first to introduce electronically controlled equipment for use within the filling hall (hazardous area); thereby offering LPG filling companies worldwide entirely new possibilities in terms of safety and accuracy.

In the aftermath of the demerger from the Kosan Group in the late 80s, the company shortened its name to Crisplant in 1994 and so in a way returned to the roots. Crisplant was introduced at the Copenhagen Stock Exchange as an independent company in December 1995.

In June 1999, Crisplant was sold to the British FKI plc and delisted at the Copenhagen Stock Exchange. The LPG activities were gathered first in a division then in an independent company under the name of Kosan Crisplant a/s. Kosan Crisplant a/s was then part of a worldwide group of companies with more than 17,000 employees.

The UFM, our universal filling machine for all purposes, was introduced in the late 90s and to this day remains the backbone of filling plants all over the world.

Years 2000-2010

In 2003 Kosan Crisplant changed management and a new corporate vision and set of values were launched. In 2004 Kosan Crisplant was acquired by Segulah, a private equity company based in Sweden.

The decade saw Kosan Crisplant follow an ambitious growth strategy with a view to enhancing its local presence by establishing subsidiaries in several key markets. The company also set up its own ISO 9000 certified production facility in Sri Lanka in 2005.

With the takeover of French competitor PAM (Provençale d'Automation et de Mécanique) in 2006, Kosan Crisplant widely extended its global network and market share.

On the product side two major innovations saw the light of day in the decade. With the introduction of KC Facility Management™ in 2005, Kosan Crisplant moved into an entirely new business area, assuming responsibility for the daily operation of its customers' filling plants.

Flexspeed enters the scene

In 2008, Kosan Crisplant once again challenged industry standards when Flexspeed was launched. Flexspeed remains the world's only high-speed filling system for LPG cylinders with a capacity of up to 4000 filled cylinders/hour on one single carrousel system.

In 2008 the Kosan Crisplant Group was acquired by Bahrain-based Seera Investment Bank.

Years 2011-2015

For more than half a century Kosan Crisplant has been the company looked to for new inspiration by both customers and competitors. And the fact that competitors worldwide make great efforts in trying to copy our products is to us merely a compliment and recognition of our status as the innovator of the LPG industry; a status that we intend to consolidate even more in the future.

Safe filling for all

The first step was taken in 2012, when Kosan Crisplant launched KCFiLL1, a simple filling machine for low volumes, aimed at satisfying the needs of an overlooked segment of LPG fillers and promoting safe filling for all.

A future beyond LPG

With the acquisitions of Birodan in 2012 and RMS Gas Engineering in 2014, trading of equipment and components for a variety of industrial gases has become an increasingly important business area for Kosan Crisplant. The focus on trading is part of our effort to become our customers' preferred one-stop supplier.
