Our history

From transport systems to high-tech filling and maintenance solutions for the modern day gas filling industry. Kosan Crisplant has gone through many changes since the beginning in 1951.

1950s

Kosan Crisplant was founded in 1951 by Mr. Svend Christensen under the name Chrisplant. Back then, the company sold transport systems for various products, such as milk cans and cylinders for kerosene and gas.

Throughout the 50s, the range of products and markets grew steadily; the innovation highlights of the decade being the chain conveyor and the filling carrousel.

By 1957, Crisplant was the world-leading company for filling systems for gas cylinders.

Where did the H go?

The company name, Chrisplant, is a mix of the Christensen family name and the English word "plant". When a workshop smith accidentally left out the letter H on the first piece of a chain conveyor, Svend Christensen decided to change the company name to Crisplant instead of discarding the piece and delaying the delivery.

1960s

After making investments in a new factory, the company and its 35 employees moved to new premises in Aarhus in January 1960.

In order to automate and rationalise the handling and sorting of parcels, we introduced a new business area in mid-60s. Crisplant now had two main product lines: LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas Filling Systems) and the new line, ATS (Automatic High-Speed Transport and Sorting Systems).

Throughout the decade, the Kosan Group acquired all the shares in Crisplant and eventually added Kosan to the company name in 1969.

1970s

Continuing a trend from the 60s, Kosan Crisplant was the catalyst for introducing LPG as a fuel and energy source in various countries around the world, opening up new markets.

1980s

In 1986, we introduced the new SF (Simple Filling) model—a more economical version of the type "U" machine. The SF went on to become a big success, selling to customers all over the world. It was short-lived, however, as technological advancements soon made mechanical filling machines obsolete. The SF ended up being the last purely mechanical filling machine produced by Kosan Crisplant.

In 1988, Kosan Crisplant was taken over by five managers via a management buy-out.

1990s

In 1990, Kosan Crisplant was the first to introduce electronically controlled equipment for use within the filling hall (hazardous area); thereby offering LPG filling companies worldwide entirely new possibilities in terms of safety and accuracy.

In the aftermath of the demerger from the Kosan Group in the late 80s, the company shortened its name to Crisplant in 1994 and so, in a way, returned to the roots.

In June 1999, Crisplant was sold to the British FKI plc. The LPG activities were gathered first in a division, then in an independent company under the name of Kosan Crisplant a/s. Kosan Crisplant a/s was then part of a worldwide group of companies with more than 17,000 employees.

A new standard for LPG cylinder filling

The UFM, our universal filling machine for all purposes, was introduced in the late 90s and to this day remains the backbone of filling plants all over the world.

2000s

In 2003, Kosan Crisplant changed management and launched a new corporate vision and set of values.

The decade saw Kosan Crisplant follow an ambitious growth strategy with a view to enhancing its local presence by establishing subsidiaries in several key markets. The company also set up its own ISO 9000 certified production facility in Sri Lanka in 2005.

With the takeover of French competitor P.A.M. (Provençale d'Automation et de Mécanique) in 2006, Kosan Crisplant widely extended its global network and market share.

On the product side two major innovations saw the light of day in the decade: KC Facility Management™ in 2005 and FLEXSPEED in 2008.

FLEXSPEED enters the scene

In 2008, Kosan Crisplant once again challenged industry standards when FLEXSPEED was revealed at the AEGPL exhibition in Milan, Italy. FLEXSPEED remains the world's only high-speed filling system for LPG cylinders with a capacity of up to 4000 filled cylinders/hour on one single carrousel system.

2010s

In 2012, Kosan Crisplant launched KCFiLL1: a simple filling machine for low volumes, aimed at satisfying the needs of an overlooked segment of LPG fillers and promoting safe filling for all.

A future beyond LPG

Our effort to become our customers' preferred one-stop supplier led to the establishment in 2008 of KC ProSupply—the one-stop shop for gas equipment.

This decade Kosan Crisplant also branched out into the LNG business, offering small-scale bunkering solutions to ferries in the new division KC LNG based at the corporate headquarters in Denmark.

New organisation

The Al-Ayuni Investment & Contracting Co., owner of French competitor Siraga since 2012, acquired Kosan Crisplant in 2015 and soon set up a new holding company for its LPG businesses, MAKEEN Energy, into which both Kosan Crisplant and Siraga were transferred in 2016. Today MAKEEN Energy shares headquarters with Kosan Crisplant in Denmark.

What does the name MAKEEN mean?

The word "MAKEEN" comes from the Arabic language. It means “strongly capable, having the full qualities and abilities to do something". We built our capability from joining multiple individual companies, each strong in their own field and objectives, together to form an even stronger unit.

In that way, our name represents the essence of our organisation: proven, capable companies combining and sharing resources to reach an even higher level. Individually, we are strong. Together, we are MAKEEN.
